From the ancient city of Varanasi on the holy Ganges River, these little boxes sell for a few pennies to poor pilgrims visiting the great temple of Lord Vishwanath (Shiva). They are made to hold sindoor, the red powder used for beauty and in ritual. They're cool, cheap, folk art pieces; lids fit imperfectly, there are chips and cracks from the wood changing shape with the humidity. These come from our favorite wooden toy shop in Benares, feet from the entrance to Vishwanath mandir. You'll feel the spiritual vibe!
